Based in Trieste, Italy
Runes: The Forgotten Path provides a groundbreaking gaming experience, fully exploiting the potential of room scale virtual reality. In Runes you will play as Leth, a powerful wizard trying to escape from the Oblivion, a magical sleep prison of the mind. Astray from the path of righteousness and trapped inside yourself by the tyrannical order of the Panopticon, you will have to face a blank beginning. With the use of your powerful spells and wits you will fight enemies, solve puzzles and pursue the recollection of all your lost memories. But are you alone?
Introducing the 4th Wall
Runes uses a new locomotion system named "4th Wall" which combines 1st person immersive gameplay with a 3rd person locomotion system in order to adress the problem of physical discomfort that affects VR players as well as to provide a new narrative to the story. 4th Wall allows close interactions (such as fighting, dealing with puzzles, etc)to happen in 1st person whereas locomotion, or roaming around the world, can be put into a 3rd person perspective with the press of a button.
The birth of the project coincided with the release of the oculus rift DK1: after years spent playing videogames on flat screens, finally having proper Virtual Reality was simply too good to be true. However, the real deal changer was the announcement of the HTC Vive — and a fruitful devkit application that brought the Vive to the team! In fact, motion controllers had been the missing piece for the project up to that point: in a few weeks the first prototype was up and running and Runes was more tangible than ever. A fortuitous cooperation with Big Rock academy allowed Stormborn Studio to turn the prototype into the first playable demo, presented at Berlin Quo Vadis in 2016. The tech demo was a great success, which pushed the team forward now with more force than ever. A new playable demo has been released for GAMESCOM 2016 in Cologne, and its potential has been recognized by many. The currently running Kickstarter campaign is the last step to finally turn the Runes' dream into reality.
